Since I was a little girl, I have always wanted to go into law enforcement. I still don't really know what sparked it, maybe it was watching true crime a lot or shows such as Criminal Minds. All I know is that I have wanted to go into this field for as long as I can remember and now that I am in college, I'm going to do whatever it takes to make that happen.
In school, I am currently double majoring in Criminal Justice and Psychology with minors in Political Science and Sociology and hoping for another minor in Pre-Law. Right now, my ultimate goal is to make it to the FBI as a special agent.
I first got introduced to policing in middle school when I decided to take part in a junior cadet program with my local police. We learned to pick up fingerprints, identify ballistics, act out ALICE drills, and so much more. At this point, COVID hit which shut everything down and that was the last I had with policing for a while because I had also gotten sick at this point.
Over this past summer, I had reached out to my local police department just to talk about that career field in general and gain insight into policing and how to get there. I was offered an internship with them, and I gladly took it. I worked with the department all summer and learned so much about the policing field.
I had the opportunity to talk to several state police officers and even a helicopter pilot in the state police and spoke about what I need to do to get there and what steps need to be taken to get into this field.
My advice to anyone looking into going into law enforcement would be don't be afraid to just reach out. Just by reaching out to my local department I was able to get an internship and get connected with several state officers. Make connections with people; by making connections it gives you people that you can reach out to if you have questions. This advice could honestly go for any career field, reach out to people and make connections with people in that career.
Don't be intimidated or afraid. Just go for it, send that email or text, make that phone call, it could be the key to a career in the future. :)
