Self-Discipline

Self-discipline is one of the hardest things about growing up. As we grew up and through grade school, we always had someone nagging on us to do our homework or make sure our room was clean and while it was annoying in the moment, I think I will forever be grateful that someone did.

As we grow up and graduate from high school and move to college, we become more and more like adults. I think that self-discipline is so important because we become more dependent on ourselves and need to push ourselves. To me, self-discipline is all about being able to push yourself to do things that you don't really want to do, like homework or working.

A point that I realized how important self-discipline is was when I moved out of home to go to college. Because my parents always pushed me to do certain things that I didn't want to do (like doing my homework and doing the dishes) I now find myself in college living on my own and pushing myself to do these same things. Having self-discipline helps get through everyday life on your own and prior to moving out and living on my own, I didn't really have to deal with any of this.

What self-discipline looks like in college:

-Knowing well enough when to do your laundry and take care of yourself. Being able to say, "okay it's time to do my laundry" and go get it done is a great form of this because yeah, nobody really wants to go do their laundry but just knowing that it has to get done and forcing yourself to go do it is a great point. Even things as simple as bathing on a regular basis and taking care of yourself is an example of this because even when you are so extremely busy (especially in college) it is easy to forget to do these simple things but making sure that you're taking care of yourself is so important because for some people this isn't so easy.

-Keeping up with homework and assignments is also a great form of self-discipline because I promise that nobody wants to do those assignments or sit down and study for hours, but when you know well enough to do so I think that's half the battle. Doing this will also help you reach your career goals by succeeding in school and perusing your dream career.

-Self-discipline also has to do with being able to push yourself out of bed in the morning to get to your awful morning shift at work when all you wanted was to sleep in, and the same thing goes for that terrible 8am class. This could also have to do with meeting your gym goals and pushing yourself to be better.

Self-discipline may come easier for some than others, but that's okay, some days it's just enough to push yourself to get out of bed in the morning and go to class or work. I think that self-discipline helps us grow up and become mature adults and know how to take care of ourselves and the space that we live in while pushing ourselves to get better either in school for a career or even in the gym or at a job.
